She was born as a premature child with very very low birth weight as 650gms.Including doctors, we never thought she will make it out of NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit).
But she was determined to make her way out of every tough situation.
Her fight begins right at her birth. As she comes out of NICU, doctors detect her eye site is hampered due to premature birth and her prolonged stay in NICU. That was the beginning of long and extensive eye treatment including numerous eye surgeries and laser treatments. Several times before surgery the option we had was to have blind baby or no baby. But she was determined to fight out every
struggle she faced and come out of all adverse situations.
Besides these eye issues, due to low birthweight she had to undergo extensive Physiotherapy to keep her muscles in shape, learn to turn, sit, walk and don't
turn spastic . The fight continued at every step she took but yes she was
determined!! She started walking at age of two.
Vision-wise she was given corrective glasses right at age of 2 months, but till age of 10 months all she could see was just bright light. Then she started the struggle to give vision inputs as her vision was stabilizing. That included occupational therapy as well as showing her various kids videos for colors, shapes, animals and scenery. That helped her to restore her vision.
At various points she was predicted to need help of Braille to read and write. But efforts put to restore her vision were showing off. By age of three she was turning out to be a normal happy child who could overcome her difficulties very naturally.
But the struggle was not over. She was detected and operated for Cataract in her left eye. Lance is fitted in her left eye.
This was the precise time when she had to join the school, and to great relief she was accepted at Cambridge International School. We all thank god for giving my
child in right hands.
At this point the struggle was no longer a struggle. Strong two hands and caring and vigilant mind of Ms Suzie was with her. For KG1 and KG2 we were unable to understand how much she could see or read but she was not getting stuck. Ms Suzie had eye on her every movement and was a great input for assessing her development.
From Year 1 she was supported by AEN Dept. with support teacher. The AEN Dept. was so clear about the support extended to her. Till date it's very clear to her and her shadow teacher that the support is to make her independent and not dependent. All the support teachers that she had and has, the privilege to have are extremely vigilant about her physical as well as emotional development. Support teachers have reported slightest change in her visual ability, helping us to clean her lens in her left eye time to time and save her left eye going blind. Also the observations of support teachers helped to determine her weak areas such as
reading, writing and spellings. This helped us to focus on core problems and
give her right kind of support in terms of Low vision Occupational Therapy, Low
vision Aids and school extended extra help to phonics. She was given extra
reading practice to develop reading skills.
And today she is learning to learn with great attitude and support from school. She runs, plays, dances, fights and makes her way out as a confident individual. We thank school for being such great support for our child. Today we can sleep peacefully knowing our child is in safe hands.
Thank you Ms Suzie for being what you are.
You have a special place in our hearts and will always be.
Regards,
Kanan and Aditya
